Crossing Ohio When Poppies
Bloom in Ashtabula

                                - by Carl Sandburg

Go away. Leave the high winds of May
blowing over the fields of grape vines
near the northwest corner of Pennsylvania.
Leave the doorstep peonies
pushing high bosoms at passers- by
in northern Ohio towns in May.

Leave the boys flying light blue kites
on a deep blue sky; and the yellow, the
yellow spilling over the drinking rims
of the buttercups, piling their yellows
into foam blown sea rims of yellow;
Go away; go to New York,
Broadway, Fifth Avenue, glass
lights and leaves, glass faces,
fingers;  go

Pick me poppies in Ohio,  mother.
Pick me poppies in the back yard
in Ashtabula.
May going, poppies coming, summer humming:
make it a poppy summer, mother; the leaves sing in the silk, the leaves sing a tawny red gold; seven sunsets saved themselves
to be here now.

Pick me poppies, mother; go, May; wash me, summer; shoot up this back yard in Ashtabula, shoot it up, give us a daylight fireworks in Ohio, burn it up with tawny red
gold.

Another Ashtabula reference....

Here is a great song written and sung by Canadian/Scottish musician David Francey about the Ashtabula Harbor.  From his album "Seaway" (2009)

Welcome Ashtabula 69ers!

Through the magic of an incredible GoFundMe campaign this web site is in buisiness once again!   24 class members donated in support of our page, allowing me to get some professional help with an aging page design.  I know it's not very up-to-date, but some of us could make the same claim and we're doing just fine holding down our place in the world!   A HUGE THANK YOU to all who got in touch and contributed.

ALWAYS:  Remember to update your contact info by sending a note with your email address to Mary.  We hate losing track of anyone and you don't want to miss any news!

ABOUT THIS PAGE:  Over the years these pages have been a joint effort by several classmates: Jerry Maunus got us started, maybe as early as 2000. Jerry was the sole funder for server space from 2008 to 2012.   Darrell Hamilton contributed early on, particularly with historical content and birthdays.  Mary Ellsworth created the current design of these pages and maintains them.  Robert Rinto sent funds to cover the cost of this website for 2015. Carol Dewey and Linette Chaney helped in 2018-2020.  In 2024 twenty four class members made donations that have set us in motion again.

HELP ALWAYS NEEDED
Are you interested in helping with a future REUNION?  Let us know.  Get in touch.  It won't happen unless we all work together.  There is not really a Reunion Committee... it's just us folks. You and me and the next member of our class ....

Do you have something to contribute to these pages?  Ideas?  Suggestions?   Get in touch.   Help  is needed with locating missing classmates , collecting email addresses, and we may need to do some fund raising in order to maintain this web site.

Please SHARE this web address to any AHS 69ers you are in touch with.
